MLB 2K10 focuses on the match-up that matters most: hitter vs. pitcher. The franchise raises the battle of bat vs. ball to new heights as Total Control Pitching meets Total Control Hitting. In the box, swing for the fences, put the ball in play, or spoil the pitch and foul it off. On the mound, paint the corners with power and precision (just watch your pitch count). Players perform with Signature Styles, a new Motion Model, updated Player Ratings, and a Batter's Eye rating that determines how quickly you identify the pitch. MLB Today tops it all off with updated stats and news, keeping in-game commentary as current as possible.

Demo was not a good representation of the game.
I got the full baseball game from Gamefly yesterday (instead of the demo) and I might have to eat my words a bit when I based this game on the demo. I'm starting to really warm up to this game, and I've decided to keep it. In this game you can play in several modes that I like. You can play not only as a team, but also you can play as a single player. I've been playing as myself (creating my own player) in player mode. In this mode it lets you play all aspects of the game from the batter, to playing a field position of your choice, to even playing as a base runner if you get a hit or walk, or get hit by a pitch. This is my favorite part of the game actually. My main complaint initially was the batting....which is extremely difficult. However, as your stats get better, the game begins to give you clues as to whether the pitch is going to be a ball or strike and on which side of the plate it will be. And eventually as you practice you obviously get better at the timing. It also has a very extensive options menu that lets you change the game to suit you, and how you would prefer the game to be (simulation, or more arcade like). I'm actually starting to dig this game now and would definitely recommend it for anyone that is dieing to get a good baseball game. This game is quite hard though.

Good Gameplay but AI still lacking.
While most of the bugginess of 2k9 was worked out, honestly there are some things that still bother me about the AI. I will list those below. First what is good:
Good: Great graphics, stadium renderings, much easier to navigate menus, fluid mechanics, intuitive controls, new My Player mode is great, etc.
Bad: AI still sucks. Examples: 1) In my player mode where you do not control the runners, you have a runner on third and hit a deep sac fly with 1 out, and the runner doesn't tag up but instead runs half way as if he would do if he was on 1st base. 2) opposing pitchers routinely go 130+ pitches, I mean seriously. 3) If you are a pitcher in My PLayer mode, the mgr never takes you out. So if you are gassed, good luck, your numbers will suffer. Example, I pitched 13 innings and the mgr never took me out even though I had 155 pitches.

If you love baseball, the stats, building your players, franchsie, etc, this is a good game. But the little AI stupid moments will drive you crazy.

Awesome Potential Just More Polish Needed
So I have read a bunch of the reviews for this game and i found one thing wrong. People complaining about the batting being to difficult. If you don't know the average batting average for a MLB hitter is usually around .250. The A.I even on difficult settings is better than most games in that it will make you work. You can not just swing at everything and say its hard to hit the ball. Watch the ball from the pitchers throwing shoulder (just like real baseball) You will be able to determine the area of the pitch more easily. Though i do think that it is hard to determine the speed of a pitch because a fastball and a change-up do not differ much towards the plate. I do not own a PS3 but from simple gameplay videos I really don't see what the fuss is about. The pitching mechanic in that game was created by MVP baseball some 10 years ago. Honestly I see no realism in the hitting and pitching mechanics in that game. But onto my review.

GRAPHICS : 7
- Greatly improved from last year, a couple hiccups here and there but nothing that defers gameplay. Player faces aren't very well done but I could careless if they look exactly how they do in real life. Animations are smooth, frame-rate never slows down, overall well done.

PRESENTATION : 10
-Its 2K Sports....need i say more. excellent as always. Good commentary, good sound, decent soundtrack, slick menus.

GAMEPLAY : 8
- Roughly discussed this already but i found no real issues except the A.I the 3rd baserunner not tagging can be quite annoying. The pitching learning curve isn't too steep. Fielding works well. Just a few minor bugs.

OVERALL

A great simulation. Takes some practice to gain an eye for the ball. But after only a few games I was able to greatly improve my batting average. A huge improvement and holds great promise for next years MLB game.

A step forward; My Player still in infancy
2K10 is certainly on the right track. It's definitely playable with a few lingering issues - Manager AI leaving pitchers in forever, etc.

The My Player mode does inject some excitement into the "sport RPG" realm, containing a few ideas I would hope to see in The Show one of these days. Still, any hardcore simulation player will want to stick with The Show.

In 2K10 your rise to the majors is way too fast, thrusting you into the big leagues after completing the simplest of goals - most hitters will be able to best these goals in two months or so. I never even saw my AAA affiliate. Instead, my overall 60 third baseman was starting for the Orioles over better players like Garret Atkins at first base. I understand they are trying to grab the casual gamer and keeping you off bench, but that's a little ridiculous.

What I do like is 2K10's "batter's eye" attribute. I prefer this over the "guess pitch" feature in The Show. Major League batters rarely guess what is coming next. They rely on scouting reports and the ability to see the spin in the ball. So a quick snap of "breaking ball" and the general location (inside, outside, high, low, and middle - the first four can be outside the zone, though) is a twitch reflex that will help many players - once they get their rating high enough.

Still, My Player is basically in the same stages The Show was in their first years with their RTTS mode: you have to run all the time, the catcher position only catches popouts, etc. There are other problems that never surfaced in The Show: you can't get traded, but you can trade yourself whenever you want to. This seems way out of place for me, but again I assume this is to allow casual players enjoy the game as they please.

The clutch situations are very interesting and add a layer to presentation. It makes RTTS look very vanilla (in that game, all you get is a little pulse in your controller when it's late in the game and runners are on.)

A solid 7.

Great game BUT...
I like the game but the realism for the players are WAAAYYYYY OFFF!! Firstly Davud Ortiz is a white skinny guy( everyone knows he's BIG PAPI HENCE THE "BIG). Troy Tulowitski looks like he never eats. Jason Variteck is black. And the list goes on and on and on and on.....0

I think they've finally gotten it right
This is the game that I wanted from 2K Sports when they released 2K6. I've played it every year and the tweaks they make usually add some good and some bad. This year, I feel like it's finally about right. The graphics are a bit weird sometimes. The players look pretty good, but their bodies are awkwardly shaped. That's always been the case with this franchise though. Good presentation for sure.

The lighting is good and I think that adds to the quality of graphics a lot. Playing day games looks better than the night games for this reason. The framerate is the best I've seen yet in this series. I didn't really notice any slowdowns at all yet, though I've heard people have gotten them in some of the quick throwing plays when a lot is happening on the field at once.

I like the new pitching mechanic. It makes you much less accurate than I can ever remember. You can still get pretty close to what you are aiming for, but any little variation will move you off your target a bit. This seems much more realistic as pitching in the past was way too easy for me. I blew all the opponents away without even using a great pitcher because my accuracy was too perfect. Not anymore, baby. I'm expecting to actually start giving up more than 2 or 3 runs.

Batting is giving me trouble still. I've scored runs, but it feels very different from in the past and is taking time to master. There are drills included to help you practice, but I'm lazy and trying to work it out in game. Hitting for contact is the easiest thing to do and you can still hit a homer with a contact swing if your batter has enough power. Fighting off pitches seems like a good idea, but I haven't felt the need to ever use this feature.

I will probably buy this game and add it to my 2K collection, but I would still like to see the exclusivity agreement end and bring in some competition. I think having exclusive rights kept 2K7 or 2K8 from bring as good as this year's version looks now.

Still have some problems...
Ok, I was really looking forward to playing this title. I made a player in My Player and got into the Majors. Stats were piling up and I was meeting goals. I decided to simulate through a big portion of the season and here comes the trouble.

So, you get a clutch situation that pops up. I understand this, get a game winning hit or make a spectacular play. But here is the trouble, in my first season I had no troubles with this play. In the second season, when you get one of these situations it calls you to the plate. Some really bad cut scenes with the typical "thump, thump" of your heart. You have to press the "b" button to enter the play and then it quick pitches me. EVERYTIME! "Strike one", yells the umpire and I never saw the pitch.

I would also suggest to be a pitcher in My Player as the plays can get a bit boring in the field. At least you can have some control over the game while pitching.

The franchise side of this stacks up with the past 2K games but the pitching is just a bit harder. When you are pitching from the stretch, you gesture goes super sonic fast, be ready for that. Batting isn't a problem like I've seen from other reviewers. You can change the level of the camera, in franchise mode, so it makes it a bit easier to identify and locate pitches. In My Player, no such luck. So take the skill portion of the schedule and use it for what it was designed, to make you a better player.

I give this game a middle of the road rating. The commentary is way better, the music is ok at best. I'd rent it and then return it. Maybe if they patch some of the faults, I would buy this title! Here's hoping 2K doesn't get the rights to this for the rest of the millenia!

Not quite there yet.
2K10 made a leap forward with the pitcher vs batter emphasis. The mechanics of pitching are much improved, however I dont really like the fact that I have to pre select my pitch before I throw it. Why did they make it so I have to select A.B.X.Y or RB and then do the pitch motions. This is different from 2K9 and is not very fun, if you select a pitch and want to change your mind you have to hit the B button to go back to pitch selection. That is not realistic.

Where are the check swings? Supposidly the patch introduced yesterday was suppose to fix the fact that the game did not ship with the ability to check swing. I never figured out how to do the check swing after installing the patch so im not real sure it fixed any issues. And maybe its me but I feel like they took a step backward with graphics this year. Yes, there are new player motions and throws and swings blah blah blah but the players look boxy, and weird. The players that do not have pictures look wierd on the menu screens.

Game options are missing. The ability to turn off AI assistance in fielding is gone, or at least I cannot seem to find it. And a problem that was not fixed from 2K9 is the randomness of player selection when the ball is in the air (when fielding). I ran into a number of issues were the computer would auto select me to control the 3rd baseman when the ball was floating into the outfield, what the heck? Give me an outfielder.

As I stated before pitcher vs batter is much better this year and is the highlight of the game. Pitching and striking out batters is ultra fun and super satisfyig if you can get past the pitching junk I mentioned. Batting is much better and more tricky. If you swing at everything you rarely get good pitches from the AI. If you hold off and get three balls thrown at you the AI doesn't automatically throw the 4th pitch down the middle of the plate as they did in 2K9.

They fixed the choppy thowing issue. THANK GOD. Overall it needs a little more tweaking.

Wrong on so many levels
It looks like baseball, the rules are the same as baseball, and it has the correct teams and rosters.

So much for the good part.

Pitching is nothing more than how annoying can you take it. You select a pitch then aim said pitch then do the motion for the pitch on the right stick. The suggested motions are not always right, take slider, according to the game slider is right then sweep down to left. In actual terms slider is right then left, sweeping gets you bad motion and a wild pitch. Aiming is barely working, not touching the left stick and doing the pitch with supposed correct movements you can find the pitch is suddenly high and tight or high and out, or a ball inside. Catchers suggest pitches and locations, ignore them they are rarely correct and tend to give the batter the pitch and location he likes.

Batting is just as bad, you press up to swing, a power swing is down then up, you can aim the hit, which seems to aim where you swing. There seems to be no bunt motion when you are doing total control batting, if you switch to classic you get a swing button and a bunt button. No power swing though which takes the entire point out of using classic. Fielding is more a matter of being lucky than skill, the camera ends up low behind your fielder, at least when playing my player. Getting to the right spot is very difficult for pop flies, the camera swings lower and you look up from the dirt.

There is a mentor, that you never want to listen to, he's a complete imbecile with about 4 phrases. Baserunning is broken, there is a slide button, along with a slide motion, the motion turns you around without pressing the button, that is never mentioned. While being a pitcher in my player, you will find you can add points to versus batter, I bet the professionals wish they had that option since you get better without improving control, speed or researching the batters.
