This stylish fantasy role-playing game is a deep, detailed treat for fans of Japanese RPGs. The visual impact of this beautiful game comes from its unique 2D hand-drawn art, rendered in 1080p at 60 FPS. But it's more than just a pretty picture. The story, which follows five characters on an epic adventure inspired by Norse mythology, is fascinating and deep. The controls and combat system are spot-on, and this edition of the game has been redesigned for more action. Every character and weapon you obtain has unique properties, resulting in an endless variety of play styles. No matter how you slice up the combat, it won't be easy. There is a multitude of monsters, and each has a different attack strategy, giving players numerous challenges.

waaayyy worth it
At a glance it looks like another fall through game but WOW .
I love this game, the story is interesting, the rpg elements have a classic flair to them, and the combo system is to die for ......like everything can be pieced together in a huge 300 hit combo its insane and to top it all off this is NOT a 10 second game so trust me its worth it.

Great game, slightly repetitive
I'm my search for new games, I game across this gem and decided to give it a shot. There's a total of 5 different playable characters, each with their own movesets, skills, and stories that tie in to the overall plot. The entire story is wonderful, one of the best I've seen in a while for a video game.
The combat, while great, gets a bit repetitive. For each of the 5 characters' stories, you replay mostly the same levels, with the same enemies and bosses. While the different playstyle of each character does make it slightly unique for each play through, it does feel like a small grind to move the story forward. In the end though, that grind is definitely worth it.
This title gave me around 40 hours of gameplay to unlock all trophies. I give it a 9/10 for a fantastic story and gameplay, only shying away from a perfect score due to the lack of new maps/enemies per play through.

Nerds can play this too!
This is the perfect combination of a piece of art mixed with a fighting game. Beautiful art that holds up over the years. Great story.

Strong story weak gameplay
Odin Sphere features a cast of five different playable campaigns. Each with its own unique cast of characters and overlap with the other stories. The campaigns are played in a set order and you must complete one to unlock the next. Each playable character has their own gimmick, but ultimately you can tell this is a prototype to the gameplay of Dragon's Crown. Many of the best combos apply on melee characters, ranged damage is still painfully slow at killing bosses, and consumables are unfortunately even more limited. I enjoyed the first two campaigns. Melee combat is enjoyable and both characters have monstrous combo potential built into their kits quickly to wreck normal encounters and bosses. Unfortunately I lost my patience on the third campaign and decided to call it there, 17 hours in. The crossbow character fails in many areas, her dps is capped due to a reload mechanic, her skills all use too many resources for the damage they deal, her health and defense are extremely low compared to previous characters, and finally the game's difficulty is increasing in spite of her flaws because technically you should be familiar enough with the gameplay to overcome them; hence why I say I lost my patience. This character is very slow to kill single boss encounters, and moderately faster at killing double boss encounters. My average kill time was double what the other two would tend to get on the same bosses. Ultimately that speed was just too much of a drop from the previous characters for me to want to continue. I recommend buying this game, it is quite good, but it's a poor choice for your one rental as it's unlikely you'll have the patience to stick through its entire 40 hour playtime before you want to play something better. Also give Dragon's Crown a try as by and large it is a much better game even with the improvements made to this game in the Leiftrhasir rerelease. Both however are very long so keep that in mind if you plan on renting either.

Great beauty but shallow.
This is a very beautiful game with graphics and and a excellent motion, combined with a sweeping sound track, but sadly while beautiful and sweeping those this game might be it is also quite linear. basically the reason for this is given at the start, which is you aren't playing as any of the characters in the game, but you are really playing as a young girl who is reading a story, and you are playing the characters in her story book, but it isn't the same as playing the characters in a game because if you were you would have some say in what methods you can use.. This linearity was INTENTIONAL .. So I can say that this game is not for me however beautiful though it may be, it is almost tragic in some respects. This isn't like dragon's crown where you can decide what class too use, but i think it is made by the same people who made dragon's crown, so if you are like me you might give THAT game a rent, and by the way a new version of dragon's crown is being released for ps4, which is worth looking forward to! This game while beautiful is sadly quite linear in comparison. This game isn't the only known beautiful game out there either i might add. potion mixing is one of the most fun things you can do in this game though! Maybe I am just a hard case or maybe i am just finicky about what games i play.. If this were a beauty pageant this game would take top prize or at least be in the running. Other beautiful games? Well, there is ori and the blind forest, there is child of light, Castlevania the symphony of the night, Dragon's crown, super metroid, and is just to name a few for games that nail the "look" and the flow of animation. Beauty though is in the eye of the beholder.. Anyway the gameplay is shallow button mashing beat'em up with some rpg elements and story on the side.. Well like I always say, try before you buy! If you like beat'em ups then you may already have this, and if not definitely recommend this at least for a rent..
