Great story with a strong learning curve.
This version of Star Ocean doesn't cater to n00bs at all. The game starts off with difficult battles which is probably what put most people off and they gave the game 5/10 & 6/10 ratings. If a player can take the time to learn the controls, the mechanics and the flow of battle the whole game becomes impressive. The story is great just like all Star Oceans and the characters are multidimensional with unique back stories. A great game overall, but not for people unaccustomed to action RPG's.

Great story, unnecessarily difficult.
Spoiler Warning!!!
Without too many spoilers I can say this game hit all my high points in what i like in a genre. Mysterious girl with mysterious powers, falls into a world unprepared for anything like her abilities and those chasing her. It's one of my favorite plots in an RPG.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish the game, and learn the whole story, because of a huge and unnecessary difficulty spike. It comes from these defend and escort missions where enemies will completely ignore you and go for the target who dies in just a few hits. There's no taunt or guard mechanic to prevent this, so you have to somehow kill these waves of enemies without them getting hits on the target. It was too much to want to continue to deal with.
But other than the defend and escort missions, this game is great RPG, with an interesting story and pretty decent combat system. I easily recommend this to those who are willing to deal with the annoying and difficult missions, as the rest of the game is great.

perfect for star Ocean fans
Pros:
Great character development and moments in the PA.
Fast pace battle being able to control 6 characters and one buffer which you can't control.
You will get lost in the crafting system.
Come:
It's a star Ocean story we love which means by the books play as hero type a in underdeveloped planet. Fight bad guys till a Kenny comes and says hay we got Tech you guys are stupid let's kick "insert evil my do bad here".
Looks big until you realize it's a big circle with like 3 paths where you will go on side quests saying what no screw your pelts I was just there.
Constantly back tracking till you get fast travel but then the enemy's get a power boost making fast travel useless because you need to grind.
Still Amazing game which you should buy to support them so they make more great content but if this is your first star Ocean maybe try first departure to see if you like it, or play it if you loved this game

Exactly what I wanted
I am a big fan of the Star Ocean series and have played all of them. If you are not a fan of RPGs then you probably will not enjoy this. For everyone else that loves to fire pure Armageddon from the edge of a sword and bleed the numbers out of a ridiculously large monster that has wings just because, this is for you!
There are a few reasons I didn't give this game a 10, mostly because I am trying not to be biased.
1) Private Actions- There are a hundreds scattered throughout the game and if you want to get the whole story on these characters it will be pretty tedious to get them. It will required hours of your time walking in and out of a room or stepping on the correct spot on the map to trigger the dialogue. Unlike other Star Ocean games however, you can only get one true character ending per completion even if you have all the character affections maxed out.
2) Maze of Tribulations- The way they set it up this time is a 3 floor, Mega Man advancement style maze. Beat the 4 bosses on one floor, will unlock the main for the floor and beating him will advance you to the next level. The problems I have with the MoT is that you have to climb the maze over and over to fight the divinities at their highest level. You are also at the mercy of the drop rate if you want to farm orichalcum, one of the games rarest equipment making materials.
3) Dead Man Walking - I am all for creating a build that makes you a death machine, but this "role" is game breaking. You are literally invincible and your health slowly drops on its own, just have your healer keep you alive and you are unstoppable. Unfortunately, they made the end game bosses so difficult that it is unrealistic not to go with this approach. They all have moves that wipe everyone out instantly. This is probably my biggest gripe with the game, there needs to be a little more balance to make it a challenge.
Overall, I hope you get the chance to play and enjoy this game!

ignore the reviews
Give this game a chance, reviews giving in 5's and 6's nitpick and forget this is a jrpg. This is a major improvement of the characters and story from 4 and the combat is a mix of 3 and 4. Combat is slow but opens up when you get more skills and the 7 party groups work well. There is a lite gambit system making the AI handle business quite well..or horrible if you don't know how to set them. They change the way the story is told with minimal cutscenes and more in game talking...but there are still some long cut scenes. Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.

Fun game bit of learning curve
Having only dabbled in the Star Ocean series I was skeptical about it. After a few hours I have fallen in love and would recommend to anyone else who likes jrpg or RPG games. Good story so far and once you get skills the fighting opens up.

This game was fun, but it fell short in a lot of ways... my expectations were just too high... it's worth a rental though
