Don't water the grass ever.
This game starts out rather slow but picks up speed after about a month of game time. Before long there isn't enough time in the day to do everything you want to. Try to ship 30 yams and potatoes in the 1rst spring and fall because they are requirements in the town restoration plans. I had to wait an extra year because I didn't ship enough potatoes. It's also a good idea to save everything you can until you need them(branches, bottles etc.) because you will need them for some of the blueprints. You should also save one of each of the herbs and other plants so you can make seeds once you have makers. Once you have all 3 areas of your farm open you can have up to 3 barns/coops but only one pet barn. If you have a dog/cat you can select them from the barn menu and ask them to help with either the livestock or the chickens so it's a good idea to have at least 2(you're only allow a total of 4 pets and one horse, the horse lives in the livestock barn). Raise your quality of flowers so you can make high quality perfume and get high quality honey/royal jelly but the hives are abandoned for the winter and have to be refilled the next spring so it's a good idea to save bees as well. This game has so many things to do and things to focus on it could have unlimitted replay value, at least until the new one comes out.

Great Harvest Moon Game...but..
Harvest Moon is a great franchise and I have played their games for years. I skipped buying the last few Nintendo DS handheld releases because I wasn't particularly interested. However, when the New Nintendo 3DS sprung I nabbed it quick. Since then Harvest Moon A New Beginning has been one of my least favorite of the Harvest Moon Games. Here is why. First, there is a very small map. You have the Forest, River, and Mountain to explore. The first week and a half of the game time you have to forage for bugs, plants, flowers and anything you find in those three searchable areas. After the first few days, you gain access to seeds. Turnips and Potatoes, a standard Harvest Moon start plant. Second: It's extremely similar in graphics, plant names, animals, and wild animals, as Story of Seasons Trio of Towns. This makes sense since it is created by the same person. Arguably, Harvest Moon is the US version of Story of Seasons, but the storylines are very different. Thirdly, the graphics aren't what I expected for a Nintendo 3DS. The colors are far too muted. Pros to this game, Camera angle changer (to a certain degree) lots of space to start with. A barn that is big and holds all your animals, which is different to Story of Seasons Trio of Towns where you have to add more buildings to house more animals. More challenging game. Fodder costs 290 in Harvest Moon ANB whereas in Story of Seasons Trio of Towns it was incredibly easy to make money by mining, and buying fodder for 80g was easy. You can choose to be a boy or a girl. (Different from past Harvest Moon games). Collecting materials, farming, building up a town (Echo Village) and thereby saving it by bringing in new people seems to be the goal of this game. I like a challenge, Harvest Moon is not for the easy-hearted. It's work. It's kept me pretty occupied for a good while. I would say definitely give this game a try. It's worth it.

Feels Incredibly Dumbed-Down, and Slow..
I love the Harvest Moon series, but, compared to the other games, this one feels incredibly slow, and overly dumbed-down; like they were creating it for babies..
I do like that you can create your own character, though, instead of being forced to play with a pre-made.

Just Not the Same
I was really hoping this would be similar to the SNES or N64 games, but it's not even close. Most of the tutorials in this game are unskipable. Sometimes they give you the option to skip them, but I don't know why they didn't do it for all of them. The fields where you can plant are predetermined sections of land that have 8 tillable tiles per section. It's like 4 or 9 tiles from SNES or N64 games put together to form 1 tile. This makes it feel less like you are farming and more like you are gardening. They heavily pad the game with days of nothing before you are able to do anything, heavily emphasizing running through the woods catching bugs. It feels like they took the worst aspects of Harvest Moon and made a different game out of just those, which is sad, because Harvest Moon was a great game on SNES/N64. All the 2D versions of Harvest Moon seem to be the better ones.

Great Title in the Series!
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning is the first Harvest Moon I've picked up for the DS/3DS since Island of Happiness and it does NOT disappoint! For a portable game, this one has some incredible depth. From marriage and family to completely customizing your farm and village, ANB is one of the best Harvest Moon games in a long time for me. I've been a fan of the series since the 64 days, and while the basic formula remains in play, new features like customizing your own character's looks and the new variety of animals and crops are keeping the game fresh and vibrant. Honestly? A must-have if you're a fan of the series, and a definite try for those of you who are new! Happy farming!

Another fine game..
The Harvest Moon series is actually has a tried and true formula.. It is a formula that has been successful due to one main tenet, and that is build a life, and do it your way, but remember that you reap what you sow..
This game features alot of the new concepts that were introduce in previous Harvest moon games, so it does work, but the formula might come across as a little, "been there, done that." But what this game tries to do differently is to give you your own customizable farmer, which is something that hasn't been tried before! You get to select your hair style, and clothing type which is a step in the right direction since you no longer are just given a premade character, but the options that you do have are limited, but hey, it is a start, at least...

Amazing!
love the new editing style they added for the town. Every hour is 1 minute in real time which i feel is the right amount of time. I would recommend saving almost everything you find seeing as how you need these things to build up the town. It's a little slow in the beginning but it quickly picks up after the first month.

Cool New Features, Slow Game Play
I have played many Harvest Moon games and I really do like the ability to change the layout of the farm and the town, but...I have been a little frustrated with how slow the actual gameplay is.
