A Few Steps Below Greatness
Battleship is the game based on the movie based on the Hasbro classic game that first came out in 1943 (that’s quite some time ago).
Thankfully, this Battleship game is much different from that Battleship game.
Battleship on the Wii is a turn based strategy game where you are given a fleet of ships – and objectives that range from destroy all enemies to escort other ships to run away. There are 26 levels in the game for about 10 hours worth of play.
Each turn, you move your ship(s), attack opposing forces, activates ports to make more ships, fix ships, supply ships with ammo or just wait for the other side to attack.
There are several different types of ships – ranging from the a very small boat used to control towers, turrets, and ports to the aircraft carrier which can make long ranged attacks and launch fighters. Some ships can go in for a close attack while others sit back and shoot from long range.
And along the way, you can activate a special ability that gives you benefits depending on the commanding officer of that level (it changes from level to level). These benefits include fixing up all ships, attacking twice a turn, getting more out of ports, doing more damage in certain attacks and so on.
But beware: the aliens also have special abilities they can use to cause major headaches.
I had a lot of fun playing the game, but there are omissions that hinder its appeal.
First off, you can’t play as the aliens, which would’ve added a new dimension to the gameplay. It also means you can’t have a two player human versus aliens battle.
Second, the presentation; its flat and uninspired. The cut scenes are just static headshots with too much text and no voice acting. Boring.
And I would’ve liked to have the ability to save a game in the middle of a level instead of having to start all over from the beginning.
Still, Battleship the game is a solid turn based strategy game that’s a sure rent – and a buy for fans of turn based strategy games.

A bit disappointed
Considering this was a Wii game and is supposed to be related to the movie battleship that is coming out, overall I was disappointed with the game play in general. The intro had me interested until I got to the game play and reminded me of RPG games on the super nintendo. I played with it for about 15 minutes and then put it back in the envelope to be sent back to Gamefly.
