Fun and challenging
This game has the great and exciting feel of both kingdom hearts and Final Fantasy. You are in a team with 2 other people you can change, It's a free attack based game(not taking turns hitting your enemy) with a reward system and an instant transition back to your quest. You fight then your on your way with what you were doing. The only thing that is a little annoying is the voices that come out of nowhere at random moments, but they can be switched off which is really good.

This is not a game where you can just run into a battle. You have to know your enemies weaknesses, attack patterns, and tricks (if any). Also, the only thing you have to go by to get through each level is a guided path with lots of dead ends which can get you lost very fast. But that is what makes a game entertaining.
One last thing. Being the PS2 and comparing the PS3 and 360, this game has some really good graphics. I was really surprised when I saw how big the game was and the amount of detail that went into the game.

I highly recommend this game for any adventurer gamer in your household.

A truly fine send-off to the PS2.
Rogue Galaxy takes me back to a time when stand-alone RPGs were being made for the fans and not for the funds. I mean, you remember the PS1's amazing RPGs despite the spin-offs? And how the PS2 also had some good RPGs but more spin-offs? And how the PS3 promises us only spin-offs? Yeah, it looks like the otaku's gonna be moving on to 360 for story, whoda'thunkit, but the PS2's not dead yet. Rogue Galaxy, one of the last great games not about horses for our rectangular friend, is an awesome and beautiful game full of good voiceover, plenty of mini-games, a fun throwback story, and a really cool battle system. (Warning: It's not turn-based.) I don't know if the game'll give you 100 hours like it promises, but if it even gives you 15 (not saying the game's short at all. By no means!), it's still a better bet than Samurai Warriors 2: Empires, you know? If you were a fan of the old-school RPG and can dig the new-school gameplay, Rogue Galaxy's something you need to try out.

Pretty Good
This game is a near perfect game for anyone who likes this type of game. My only problem is that you have to stay in 1 area every once in awhile and sometimes the enemies are twice as strong as the last place you just were at so you do get stuck sometimes.

A rousing romp indeed!
An excellent mix of Dragon Quest VIII and Dark Cloud 2, this little gem makes me believe in the PS2 once more! The voice cast is astounding and the game play is more like Dark Cloud 2 instead of that famous one that came out earlier that looks like they are peeing on each other...

The leveling up is amusing but can be quite a chore if you aren't into the monster hunting and some of the controls take a little while to get used to, but if you are looking for a great space pirate RPG (and who isn't, nowadays?), this is the one you need to put everything down for, RIGHT NOW!

the best rpg next 2 FF XII
i first saw rogue galaxy for the first time earlier this year and i was amazed and how the game looked and it play way better then it looks. You don't do the wait and attack in this game, you actually fight. this part of the game was greatly influenced from Kingdom hearts in which this battle system worked very well. The levels are flawless and beautiful, the cut scenes are different, and the worlds are vast with level design and enemy design as well. If you compare this game to Final Fantasy 12, they both tie. Where Final Fantasy 12 didn't do well in, Rogue Galaxy did perfectly and where Rogue galaxy do well in, final Fantasy exceeded in. This is by far one of the best games for the PS2 and ends the system with a bang!

And it had such potential...
Rogue Galaxy seems to have an incredibly bright future. It's got pirates and space travel. That's right, Space Pirates! But once you get past the premise and into the actual gameplay it falls short.

The plot manages to be incredibly simplistic and predictable most of the time except for a few gross exceptions where the player is supposed to infer what has happened through phenomenal leaps of logic with no help from any input from within the storyline.

If you get past that, however, you do have a massive world of gameplay through a multitude of sidequests from weapon synthing to weird insect strategy fighting tournaments to rare item discovery to assembly line puzzle tasks. If you've got a bizarre sidequest fetish you'll love this game about halfway through. At that point the weapon upgrades peter out and you've found the ultimate combinations for everyone. The main character's, frustratingly enough, is actually the highest form of the first sword you got in the game.

The weapons all max out at level 48, which if you're attempting to finish the sidequests you'll reach relatively quickly. If you're not trying to complete the sidequests, there's no reason to be playing. Horrid plot, remember?

That all being said I managed to log nearly two hundred hours playing this game. I had hopes that eventually there would be some grand reward. The rewards were not at all worth the effort, I'm afraid, but I stubbornly persevered since I had already gotten that far. It led to an obnoxious hundred floor dungeon to play in for a clear game and a boss fight that, like the rest of the game, came down not strategy or even the power of my level 99 characters, but to sheer patience.

Rogue Galaxy is not an epic RPG. It doesn't have endearing characters or even any dramatic moments. It's pretty and it's long. And it turns out not to even be long in a good way like building and hand-painting a giant model of the Millenium Falcon but in a chewing your own arm off kind of way.

Could have been a timeless classic
Rogue Galaxy is a beautiful game. The art style is amazing and the graphics engine functions very well on the PS2, occasional dips in the framerate now and then.

However the nice art style is crippled by the lack of options to display the screen. No 16x9 widescreen support, no 480p support, no "flicker filter" seen in other games like FF12.

The sound options are equally disturbing. Not only is there a lack of Dolby PL II, there are no sliders for music/sound effects volume.

Of course a great game is not determined by the options menu alone, but the fact is this game has an options menu very similar to SNES games. It's a difficult prospect to understand.

Lack of sound sliders might not seem like a big deal, but after 2 hours of some of the most mind numbing soft jazz piano tunes blaring out of my 5.1 speaker system, it becomes a big problem. Anyone who played the first Dark Cloud knows how bad music can really drive one over the edge.

Its a real shame too because Rogue Galaxy does many things very well. The art design is spot on, the battle system is engaging, albeit problematic with the AI, abundant potions make the constantly off track AI less of an issue.

The voice acting is poorly paced and unfortunately since the story is so bland you'll most likely tune out during the cut scenes anyway. The story starts out confusingly generic and never really strays from that theme. Characters make decisions that seem downright despicable, yet are forgiven with lines like "it doesn't matter". Wait a second, it "doesn't matter" that a character took actions that almost killed another, and here they are in the same party? Boggling.

If you can stand the terrible sound, lack of options and retread story there is quite a fun game underneath it all. Its such a shame that this level of "dumbed down RPG cliché" must be stripped away to find it.

Some might call this a 2nd rate Cel Shaded FF12 clone, and while not correct, its closer than it should be.

Wow!!
Just when I had started to give up on ever seeing another good console-style RPG, I am proved wrong with Rogue Galaxy. If I had to use one word to describe this game it would be: addictive. There's a lot to do in this game, and it somewhat reminds me of Tales of Symphonia in that the combat is real time (with a twist), and there is a lot of stuff to do in the game. One thing I especially liked was the hunter ranking. While it's not as fleshed out as I would have liked (would have been cool to meet up with other "hunters" you were competing against and perhaps challenge them or something), it provides an interesting challenge to go out and hunt down all sorts of creatures so you can be "number 1". The story telling in this game is superb, and the characters all have well fleshed out personalities and issues they must contend with.
Another thing I loved about this game was the sound. The music fits every environment nicely, and the sound effects are well done. Also, almost all of the dialogue is spoken. The characters even spout out "words of wisdom" while you're running around trying to complete your next task. This, however, can get annoying after a while and I found myself turning off the option so I wouldn't have to hear one of them say something like "are we going the right way?" for the 3,000th time. And, while hunting for hunter points and a new rank IS fun, it can get maddening when you are looking for a rare creature that only pops up every 20th fight or so just so you can get "just 3 more!". They should have made it so that the rarer creatures required less kills. I once killed over 150 of these annoying turtles just to fill a quota of another more rare enemy.
The cel-shaded graphics are very pretty to look at, and the environments almost never get boring. The cutscenes are also very gorgeous, but LONG! There were times when I asked myself "ok, can I play YET?!" But, that's a minor gripe. Great plot, wonderful characters, great game

Phantasy Star Upgraded times like 8
First before you even think about renting this game the graphics are anime type so if you are not into that dont rent it the gameplay is kind of like phantasy star which i really loved this takes it way farter and it is a grat consept also the story line is actully really nice with alot of different plot twist my favorite part still is the weapons there are more then 100 different ones they all look different and some have attributes overall this game rocks the only reason i gave it a 9/10 is because of the stupid spawning of creatures in some areas you take a few steps and are in a battle
