Return to Castlevania as Hector the Devil Forgemaster. As a former pupil of Dracula who became disillusioned with your master, you fled from Vallachia. But three years after Dracula was defeated by the Belmonts, Isaac, another pupil, finds you and has your beloved murdered. Now on a quest for vengeance, you will use your Devil Forgery skills to make your way through Isaac's traps and minions. Beautifully rendered in 3D and accompanied by a moody musical score, Curse of Darkness has all the darkness and brilliance that Castlevania fans have worshipped for two decades.

Hector sure can kick some arse
Take one part ex-demon summoner/blacksmith, toss in a dash of vengeance for a murdered love, and sprinkle lightly with Dracula's dying curse and you have the latest installment of Castlevania for Ps2.

Hector is one angry Devil Forgemaster. Having recently lost his wife by the hands of his old ally Isaac, Hector sets out on a path of vengeance which unsurprisingly becomes a quest to stop Dracula himself. The story itself is pretty cliché and forgettable, but it had a few interesting points.

The controls in this game are pretty similar to the last one. Equipping different weapons and mashing square allows you to do various combo attacks. Hitting circle at the end of any of these grants you a nice finishing move. You can also control the camera now with the right analog, a nice feature.

Devil summoning and forging. This is where the game shines. You can acquire various minions who fight with you, leveling up and gaining their own unique skills. Very cool. On top of that, enemies occasionally drop ingredients for forging various weapons and armor. You will find yourself stealing and killing enemies repeatedly just so you can get that new kick arse weapon or armor.

For a while, the game can be pretty fun. Towards the end, however, the repetitiveness of the monsters and dungeon layouts can get extremely annoying. There is a bit of optional areas to explore and items to make if you're into that kind of thing. Overall, the game is pretty fun until you realize you just went through a room in Dracula's castle that looks exactly the same as the last four rooms you went through. Definitely worth a rent.

Castlevania returns to the PS2 once more.
Konami graces the Castlevania fans with Castlevania Curse of Darkness, does it live up to the expectations, hopes and dreams? Probably not, while the game is good, it's by far not exactly ranked up there with some of the best Castlevania games out there.

Set in time after the events of Castlevania 3 for the NES, you take control of Hector, a former Devil Forger for Count Dracula, he returns to the lands in search of the other apprentience Devil Forger Issac in a story of revenge. After you're greeted by a wonderful FMV, you begin your quest, by something you might as well get use to doing quite often. Running down an empty corridor.

..You'll see these quite often, but, hang in there, the toughest part of the game is happening.

Truth be told, as you get further into the game, you do notice the game's great gameplay and solid ideas. Muliple sets of weapons, the ability to craft your equipment on the fly, but what sets this interest is, your Digimon like monster companions who you free and assist you. You have all sorts of creatures from "Fairy" type who heal you in battle, open up your treasure chests, to "Battle" types who make you grin like a small child when they go around smashing monsters into the ground.

The controls are quite solid and rather fluid, and the learning curve is so simple you'll figure out what you're doing with all the handy in-game tips you collect. Where this game does not shine is the lackluster enviroments, as stated before, you'll be running down empty corridors, and fighting dull rooms with nothing in them. While this is fine for the outdoor enviroment, the indoor ones such as the abandonded castle, doesn't feel like a castle, just, yet another dungeon.

Another fine point in the game, is that by a glance, you know how your fights will be. Bosses are either tough all the time, or they're all easy. Very very few will all of a sudden emerge with some cheap attack to win in one shot. A plus in my eyes.

Overall, worth a shot.

Great concept but weak execution
This game started very weak. Luckily I gave it a chance. The maps are pretty boring and cookie cutter, as are the demons. The bosses were the most fun... and I loved upgrading my little helper dudes. They were the best part of the game by far. I loved seeing what new skills they would learn and how I could use each one in different situations. By the mid to end of the game I was having a lot of fun and wish it hadn't ended so quick...

Not what I expected
I thought maybe since they were revamping this title to play more in the 3D realm this would be a better game. I only wound up playing most of the first level and then just sent it back. It was a lot of running around killing the same old enemies. I found it pretty boring and the graphics didn't help much.
Not much to look at here.

What a boring game!
I wondered if the producers of this game have ever played a game called God of War--because Castlevania:Curse of Darkness is extremely boring and repetitive. I played it for a couple of hour and send it back to Gamefly the next day.

pffffft
this game looks like it was made for PSone. it looks like they spent more time on the drawing for the front cover of the game than they did on the actual game itself. thumbs down. symphony of the night was way better than this (insert insult here) game.

Back to roots Castlevania
I thought this latest Castlevania was excellent. The level design and game play were outstanding. I also loved how Konami incorporated some of the RGP concept that was found in SOTN into this game. I highly recommend this game, if you don't buy it then you should rent it!

Okay, but you have seen it before
So this game arrived in the mail and from what it told on gamefly it was ok, and it did turn out to be ok, but enphasis on the ok, you've seen ths before the gameply is very similiar to the devil may cry franchise, but with more rpg elements added and also not as scary, i'd give this game a 5/10

very good
This game is very good. Starts out a little slow but as you get into it it gains alot more depth and gets alot more fun. The camera is a tad annoying but the ids and weapons forging is good. The game is good. Not the best, but very good.
