Set in an epic fantasy world of gods, dragons and warfare comes Drakengard, one of the first highly anticipated action RPG's from the union of Enix and Square. As Kyme, you are mortally wounded when you try to rescue your sister from an attack on the kingdom's castle. But to avoid death, you make a dragonpact with a menacing Red Dragon, saving your life, but becoming one with the dragon in the process. Now you will unravel the mystery behind the enemy empire's sudden rise to power and deal death from the skies atop your ferocious dragon. Engage in awesome aerial dogfights, strafe ground targets from above, or unleash Kyme's deadly melee skills using over 60 hand-to-hand weapons. Drakengard is the dragon adventure we've all been waiting for!

One of the best i ever played
Drakengard is amazing! That's the gist of how to describe it. You are Caim a man who traded his voice for his life in a pact with a dying dragon to seek revenge on the empire. I played the 2nd game before this one and yes the melee combo's are better but the magic of Drakengard 2 is nothing to the first and as you level up the weapons the magic gets stronger along with the weapon. One sad thing is you have a time limit on the other characters and can only have one with you at a time unlike the second game where you can be one of the other characters for the entire level and switch between all four characters. And this game has five endings instead of just three like the second game, and you have to meet certain requirements to see each ending instead of just playing the game over to see each ending. With that said I highly recommend this game and urge you to play it.

Good, but nothing new
This game is definitely a game that could have been great. It has many of the right ideas, but does not deliver where it needs to.

Given the release date of the game, it begs that you consider other games of a similar genre. Koei has been producing Dynasty Warriors games for a long time now, which all play better than this one.

On one hand, this game is better as you get a variety of weapons and abilities, along with the ability to light up battlegrounds with a firebreathing dragon. The customizable play style on the fly by changing weapons is a nice feature, but it ultimately doesn't mean much over the course of the game.

Unlike the Dynasty Warriors games, the combat in Drakengard lacks in fluidity. It is very broken up, and each combi leaves you exposed in between attacks for too long a time. Because the enemies tend to block a lot, you will likely find yourself running in circles until you pick up enough speed to perform a running attack, which will knock enemies to the ground.

In the end, the game is good due to its story, unique implementation of an alternate fighting method in the form of a dragon, and the customization, although limited, of weaponry and abilities. However, the gameplay becomes boring when you figure out that the most effective way of fighting is to run around for about 15 seconds, then take one swipe at a group of enemies, slash away til they stand up, and then run around again, especially when you realize how small the groups of enemies can be.

The sequel might be better, but this first attempt in this genre of game falls flat. You'd be better off getting a Dynasty Warriors game, which also has multiplayer and many warriors to choose from.

Highly Underrated Cult Game
I can't really add anything to review, that hasn't already been said. One of the very few games, that even with 5 alternate endings, IT NEVER ENDS WELL!

My only thing to include is that the protagonist's name is Caim, not "Kyme", like GameFly's description seems to think.

Square Dynasty Warriors?
If you are into the Dynasty Warriors series, then this game is for you. It's real fun at first but quickly becomes the same mundane tasks over and over again with a decent sized arsenal of weapons that you will only use 2 or 3 of them. But if that sounds like "awesome" to you, i'm sending it back now :)

This game rocks...
This game is so surprisingly addicting -- who would have thought that burninating the countryside atop a dragon would be so much fun? The combat system on the ground is a little one-dimensional, but once you get your dragon you don't really care anymore. Thumbs up from me.

This will hurt your brain
I was really disappointed with how poor this game was. The cut scenes were gorgeous, and the game play as the dragon was fair. What killed this game for me was the music, and ground combat. The battle music repeats the same four bars over and over and over, driving you insane. It isn't even very good score wise. It is much like incessant knocking on a door you could never answer. The combat moves sooooo slow and your moves are very repetitive. Eventually you will reach a point where most of your magic is repelled back at you and you can't break out a combo strong enough to free yourself from the mindless ai of your assailants. This could have been an excellent game if the programmers were as good as the artists. This was like atari's "ET" in dynasty warriors cosplay.

Drakengard - Excellecnt Dragon Game
Very nice graphics for its age (2004).
Integration between human and dragon player was very nice. Good story line, needs more of a history, but still nice. The games natural progression of the storyline and characters is well thought out. All in all it is worth renting.

Excellent. Slow, but excellent.
The first part is really sucky!
It is, I hate to say it.
the first level is the worst of all.
You have a 3 hit combo, and it's really confusing.
However, later, it gets a lot better.
You really end up trying to get 100%. It's really addictive, actually.
And for a two year old game, it's not that bad. I really liked it.
The only problem is none of the ending doesn't really tie in that much with the second game.
It makes you wonder how things happened.

Overall, it's really addicting.
