Outstanding Fighter with Inconsistent Online Play
Admittedly, I don't play fighting games online very often, since it's a poor substitute for sitting on the couch and playing with real people. I'm not trying to defend Nintendo for doing a poor job of implementing online play: I'm just saying that competing with a rowdy group of trash-talking players is the best way to experience this game. Some titles are just more fun to play locally. Super Mario Party, anyone? Let's assume that you played this game online with a perfect connection and you still weren't convinced of its greatness, I'd nevertheless recommend playing with a group of friends, and unless you absolutely hate the gameplay mechanics, there's a good chance that you'll completely change your mind. Even if there's a skill difference between you and your pals, you can bridge that gap by tinkering around with handicap mode. Fighting games are largely social experiences: they've been that way ever since they originally gained popularity in the now-dead arcade scene. Playing lag-free and getting completely annihilated by random strangers is nice every now and then, but personally, I'm content to play locally, and that's why I gave this title a perfect score. Even though the online play is flawed, it's arguably the best fighter of 2018.

I love the way you can have all your greatest characters all in one game and beat another. DLC is a must

Excellent Fighter: Varies in Other Departments
Besides the fact it's chock full of characters, game modes, and collectibles, it's also a BLAST to play. I could gush about the local multiplayer experience for hours, but your online experience may vary. A lot of it comes down to how reliable your and your opponents' internet connections are (like with most games, especially fighters) but the lack of variety in online modes is a bit deflating. After a recent patch, it does a pretty good job matching you up to like-minded opponents though, and there's also custom arenas. The arcade mode it calls "Classic Mode" is great, with custom series of battles pre-set for each of the 70+ characters. Don't hope for much in the story mode though. While it's expansive and full of references, it's not terribly fun to grind through. And there's not much of a story either. But the fighting is the heart of the game, and in that it excels.

Love it, but Lacking
Love the Combat, the Roster, and the diversity of the complementary content, but the game is missing some elements. One thing I had hoped would return from Brawl was a Level Builder - it didn't. In addition, the "Story Mode" is the weakest I've seen from Fighting Games in general, offering a pinch of intro-narrative and then nothing but moving about a board and fighting under differing conditions. That said, even with the surprising lack of content variety in terms of activities to pursue, what the game does do is phenomenal. I write this review as getting this as a gift - it is worth a purchase if you even like fighting games. Fair warning though, the game makes it a focus of collecting the Roster's 70+ characters as "content", so it will be fatiguing if you aim to simply fill out the advertised roster.

meh
Very confusing menu system with no real explanation of what anything does. If you’ve never played smash before, it’s almost impossible to understand what to click on or what some options do/change in game without just testing it out and trying to figure it out, or looking it up online. The gameplay is fine I guess, but just isn’t for me. Also the whole spirits portion of the game (yet again hardly any explanation for this mechanic) or any sense of moving around the map and battling is just dumb to me. As others have mentioned, the online is bad. I’d only recommend if you’re and avid smash player, or have lots of people to play with.
