Not quite living up to the Title
Thought this would be a great game to take me back to flight sim days of Aces of the Pacific, etc. Unfortunately I was disappointed by repetitive dogfights, unforgiving flight models with an inability to tweak the reality settings. Bottom line is a game should be FUN before it becomes too realistic. The old fighter axiom, 3 hours of boredom intermixed with 30 seconds of sheer panic shouldn't hold true for a game.

The graphics were nice, but don't make a game of it.

I thought it was good
I like the whole WWII era flying games, and this one was pretty good. I like the controls, even if it did take me 10 minutes in the tutorial to finally figure out how to throttle up, hehe :P

My only cons for the game are, like stated many times before by others, the steriotypical voice overs, and it seemed to me that once you unlock certain aircraft and update them, that you almost become invincible.

But still fun and worth a rent, IMHO.

Awful
I've been waiting a long time for a new aircraft game to play on the XBox console so when I rented Heroes I was very excited. The old aircrafts where very appealing and a welcomed change to the jet fighters used in other games. Unfortunately, I sold out to the idea of being able to fly the old prop planes. What a mistake!
The graphics were OK but the physics were terrible. I played Airforce Delta Storm and had no trouble flying the aircraft in that game. In that game you can fly at Mach speeds and still have better control of the aircraft than in the old wwII planes of Heroes of the Pacific.
I've invested about 2 hours of my time trying to get the hang of the controls. I tried arcade mode with little success and decided to move on to professional. I liked those controls better but as with Arcade mode I also suffered from constant over-steer. I tried the Learning to Fly mode and I just wanted to shoot the instructor! His instruction usually came after I already performed the task so his commentary was delayed and therefore a bit out of context. And what's up with the stall recovery mission?!!! There's little to know guidance about how to perform that stunt. The best I could do was stall at four thousand feet, get leveled off, and bounce the planes belly off the ground a few times before regaining a steady climb by which time my plane was spewing flames and smoke for the rest of the ride. What a bunch of garbage.
I don't know what's up with programmers at gaming industries but if I want anything close to real-time flying I'll go out and by Flight simulator for use on a beefed up multi-monitor PC. But, I'm playing the XBox...for crying out loud!!!...I just want to blow stuff up and buzz buildings. A good storyline helps too. But don't bother me with sloppy game play like Heroes of the Pacific.
Bottom-line, my frustrations with this game caused me to hate it. Go ahead and try it to experience a bad aircraft game.
Ok for the average player
Im going to be honest.
My 1st impression of the game was not a good one. The controls were very choppy. I could hardly fly the aircraft in "Professional" mode. I am a aircraft junkie so I love realism. So I tried again to no avail. I reluctantly swithed the control to "Arcade" mode to keep my self in the air.

Now that i was in the air i was able to enjoy the freedom of flight and the not to shabby but could be better(way better) graphics. The graphics come into play in the air with the explosions and gun fire rather than all around. But since youll be spending most of your time in combat it shouldnt bother you to bad. If your a graphic junkie like me then you should be ok after your first couple of views of explosions in the air and the parachutes floating down from aircraft that has been shot down.

The game play is truly arcade based. You have missions and story interludes but its basically beat the mission and then you can go to the next level. Occansionally you can find yourself landing on the aircraft carrier. Not manual of course. You will end up flying through 2 rings to engage the landing sequence.

The story line is no where near Ace Combat 4 or 5
But it does heat up when you start to engage with the japense aces.
the game is ok and i had even given it a second go round after i beat it the first time to try and unlock all the airplanes.
Such as the famous zero which turns far better than the P.O.S. warhawk you start out with in the begining. Word to the wise, the best aircraft i think so far is the p40 lightning. Now i havent unlocked all of the planes but i did unlock some really good ones. Like the Hellcat, but the hellcat is just to sensitive even on "Arcade" mode.
Now one aircraft i wanted to get was the mustang.
The mustang is a great plane by reputation through history, now if it lives up to its name in the game im unsure.
But overall the game is alright if your in for a history lesson. I wouldnt rent it a second time though.
MESSIAH

Flying..... with blinders on?
If you like games that lock you into staring forward then you'll love Heroes of the Pacific. I don't know what research the developers did on flying an airplane in a dog fight but in order to get behind an enemy plane you have to be able to see where he is. Most of the time you find yourself blindly turning hoping that you correctly guessed the right way to go, only to find the enemy plane has pulled another maneuver and your are nowhere near him. To make matters worse you are under a time limit that makes it crucial to be able to finish off enemy planes quickly. The stall feature although realistic only added to the frustration as crashing into the ground seemed to be the mostly deadly opponent of the game. This game had great promise and perhaps someone could release another version that gives you more flexibility and greater range of vision.

Long, Hard, but worth it.
A solid game, especially when you cheat. Since we're talking rental here, its a great way to blow a couple of days. The graphics are beautiful, the controls are crisp, and if you ever wanted to fly a real plane, well ya' better get a license. This is all about shoot, bomb, make it go boom. Seriously, playing through this game with the provided planes is about impossible, challenging is the greatest understatement for this game. Its impossible to beat with the planes it gives you. Some missions, I honestly think the designers thought it would be funny to make a game no one would ever beat. Then again they did give us cheat codes. Go for the codes, and have a blast. A word of advise Skip the training mission cause it bites. You can learn more from just playing, than the training will ever be worth, plus the training insults you, and if I'm gonna play a game, its not to be insulted. Just start the game, and have fun. A great game overall.
