In a world where 2D games reign supreme, an organization called Bombyx Mori forces its citizens to churn out 2D games as offerings to their leader. Those who dare to use new technologies or whose games don't meet their standards risk banishment to the soul-crushing Trial Grounds. A girl awakens in this world with no recollection of anything beyond her name, Neptune, and soon realizes she possesses great strength. With her newfound sense of heroism and a strange book known as Histoire in hand, she sets off on a journey to see if there might be more than this 2-dimensional life!

Decent story, enjoyable dialogue, easy game
A decent Neptunia story with enjoyable dialogue, some interesting mechanics, and a fairly easy game overall. Skill assignment to formations and keeping track of abilities to learn/master from gear were both a bit confusing to organize and could've been better laid out. There weren't many fights that required casting buff and heals, and the bonus for exploiting elemental weaknesses made most enemies a piece of cake while Absorb seemed to work well on all the rest, including Metal Dogoos. You can also hold L2 to speed up combat when waiting for the action gauge to fill. There's a bit of grinding required for side quests and to earn all of the AP needed to permanently learn combat skills and passive abilities from equipped gear. Though, the only passive abilities I ever used were +Strength, +Intelligence, Auto-Regen, +EXP Boost, Auto-Haste, Half-AP. It can be difficult to figure out where to go for some parts of the game due to a lack of quest tracking on the map, as well as some area transitions not being marked on the map anyway. Lastly, be sure to save occasionally as the game did freeze/glitch out on me during 3 random battles.

Nope
The game is quirky and has a good sense of humor. As far as game play goes its a nightmare. It started very slow and is a little unforgiving at some points. After I got knocked out and lost progress I was decided to just end it there. It could have been something better.
It's all in 2D from what I can tell except for a few still animation scenes. It has a mix of platforming and ATB style RPG combat. It looks very primitive. If you can get past that it's probably fine. Sorry if I'm being too harsh but this is close to Zelda CDI levels of bad.

Like a kangaroo
It's okay, even as a fan of the series. I can't tell if they struggled with the different game design or phoned it in. This game just feels lazy. It's short and easy. My only big issues were quests and the background. Quest have little guidance and are scattered about the world. You get a quest from the beginning that you can't complete till 1/4 the way through the game. Or my favorite, exterminator quest. You get new quests after a milestone in story, but the kill monster ones are broke because once you hit the milestone the monsters change. You can easily spend an hour looking for 15 enemies that once were common but now there's a different rotation of monsters. And next the backgrounds. They can be summarized easily. Think Link CDI. You're never quite sure what's a platform or what's foreground/background. Only play if you are like me, I like the series and beat all the others so why not? It's a nice break from grinding battle passes and disassembled games resold as games as services.

It’s a very unique entry to the franchise and the combat is very smooth and entertaining.

Interesting 2D RPG concept, but...
I wasn't sure how I would like a side scrolling RPG type game. I found that it didn't bother me at all and was sometimes enjoyable. The real problem with the game for me is what wasn't there. At several different points during the game, I found myself asking where I am supposed to go from here or what am I supposed to be doing to advance the storyline. Besides a single one line text in the upper right corner no other assistance is provided on what to do for the main quests. The battle system bothered as well. It is a shared points system meaning only one character can attack at a time and depletes the groups action bar. Swapping characters during battle was sluggish and lead to characters taking extra hits they shouldn't have. The map system is not great and if you are depending on it to navigate the game you will be in trouble. I wanted to like this game and put in about 15 hours before I just couldn't take it anymore.
