The American Civil War was the last era of the Privateer - the ocean-faring pirate. The Confederacy gave out licenses to those with civilian vessels willing to run the Union blockade, making smuggling profitable, if very risky. Take command of your own ship as Abraham Gray, a captain with dreams of glory. Sail freely among the 19 different ports in the game, up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and the North Caribbean, some free, some blockaded. Raid cargo ships, fight the warships - including the fearsome ironclad - and complete quests as you decide whether to be a Union spy or a Confederate raider. Experience great on-foot action as well, as you battle dozens of different enemies and bosses.

An Actual Review
I wasn't going to review this game, because its the type of game that some will love and some will not. It reminds me of the first and second Fallout games a bit, in both character growth and game play. For this I liked the game. Dont get me wrong this game is not as good as those two but its in the same family. There are frequent loading screens, there are issues with speed in the sailing areas of the game, and so far the game has a stifled feeling because there is alot more I want to do but can't. The make or break point for me is the difficulty curve, so far there are two types of encounters normal and very hard, if the game insists the players grind for several hours to deal with very hard encounters then the fact that the battles get repetative and there are so many loading screens will make the game ultimately fail. There are some issues with the sound quality and this is a game you can play on mute which is to bad. The graphics are above average in the cutscenes and sub-par in the battles. Finally, the story could be good, but I dont know exactly what it is, the game has a VERY open ended feel to it. If you played the game GUN and enjoyed it, you might like this game. If like me GUN disappointed because it was so short, and open ended then this game might aslo. There is a lull in games coming to the PS2 these days and Swashbucklers might be a nice hold over.

A decent overall game
Overall this game is decent and fun, though so far I think replayablity is very low, but it could use a lot more to make it great. For one the fact that your only ever allowed one ship at a time period is pretty weak. 2) the boss fights are way to few their arre only like 4 through the entire game. and 3) the final boss battle, both the Naval one and the actual person to person one, is so hard its pathetic. It involves a stratagy of mostly running around prayin you have enough energy and health to accomplish your goal. But neverthelesss its a great fight, somewhat fusterateing but still very good. 4)the fact you cannot sack towns and stuff is totally weak. And finally dude what the heck is with the extremely weak ending of this game after the final boss fight? seriously that was weak.

Not well executed
I thought this game had some possibilities but was lacking in many ways. The load screens come up too often and some voice acting would have really been helpful. If you like a slightly non-linear game with cool side missions that doesn't take place in a crime ridden city, try Gun instead!

Great Concept
Great Concept for a game but made very poorly. The graffics were made poorly and the constant loading screens for EVERYTHING will eventually turn you away from this game.

Pirates! remake
Remember "Sid Meier's Pirates!"? Well this is a pretty dumbed down cheap version during the Civil War. But over-all if you can ignore the peanut style voice over not bad. Great fighting controls.... to bad so much time between them.<br>If nothing else a way to kill a weekend. Too bad no walkthroughs I can find ANYWHERE.

WORST GAME EVER-I wouldnt keep it for free
I tried to ignore the fact that the voices(If you watched charlie brown maybe u would understand) were cheap sounding and just play the game. Horrible game play and graphics. Very boring, the ship battles were probably the best part of the game but even that was kind of lame. I always buy the game I rent but this will be the first time I sent a game back without thinking twice.. you couldn't give me this game for free.

better than I thought
this game is based in the american civil war era. Upon hearing that I thought it was gonna another lame historical game. Boy was I surprised when it actually turned out good. In the game you take on the role of Abraham Grey, a gentleman of fortune (aka a pirate). Not only that he has an inner voice that annoys him often. All throughout the game you sail your ship to different cities doing missions or attacking other ships and either taking there cargo or (if the ship is better than your current one) taking the ship too. There are 2 types of missions, first are normal missions that have absolutely nothing to do with the story line. Then you have story missions. You can later in the game choose to be union or confederate but it depends on which story missions you complete (the ones in havana are for the union and the ones for the confederates are in nassau and jacksonville). The game does get a little repetitive but there are some surprises throw in to make it worth it to keep playing. my only advice is the get strong stats and the best ship you can buy ( or steal which is what a cheapskate like me always does)
