Akiba's Beat is set in Akihabara, Tokyo's famous tech district, and it's a hilarious spoof of classic Japanese RPGs. You are Asahi Tachibana, the leader of a small squad dedicated to eradicating unreality from Akihabara. You and your crew will explore a realistic representation of the neighborhood and interact with the quirky people who live there. The investigation eventually leads to fantastic dungeons called "Delusionscapes." These surreal places represent the fantasies of the population of Akihabara, and they're packed with monsters called "delusions." To bring reality back to Tokyo, you must defeat the delusions in party-based battles that will put your strategic skills to the test. Mixing the "real" Akihabara with the elaborate fantasies of its residents makes this a truly unique gaming experience.

Tragic
Akiba's Beat manages to take everything about Akiba's Trip, a sincerely enjoyable and heartfelt, if campy game, and instead turn it into one of the most phoned-in RPGs you could possibly play. Replacing the previous game's fairly vibrant and lively rendition of Akibahara with a soulless shell inhabited by faceless mannequins and no reason to explore. Gone are the irreverent and amusing strip battles, replaced by a barebones combat system that seems stolen from a intro-level game design course. Gone is the over-the-top story about vampire cabals and secret organizations peppered with entertaining characters, instead replaced by melodrama that takes itself far too seriously trying to explore social issues. Gone is any real sense of personal connection as your personal avatar and freedom to look and do as you please is robbed by the presence of a bland and uninspired shounen protagonist. Akiba's Beat isn't the worst JRPG I've played, not by a long shot, but it may very well be the most disappointing.

Why all the hate?
I am enjoying this game quite a lot, I rented with low expectations and I am pleasantly surprised, the characters are funny and have great personality and the story is interesting enough to keep you entertained. So far the reviews I see are only hate for the game and no explanation for why, just play the game for yourself and make your own decision. Highly recommended.

Feels Like a Generic Persona Game
While the gameplay doesn't directly mimic the Persona series, the whole game feels like its trying to ride the hype Persona 5 generated, as the plot is painfully similar in multiple ways. Honestly, I have trouble thinking of points to make about how bad this game is because everything about this title is so underwhelming and mediocre. Everything, for lack of better words, was incredibly boring and blended together. I played this game for Bo longer than two hours, and that was only because I wanted to force myself through the game in case it got better and I wouldn't have to mail it back. Long story short; don't waste your time on this game. If you want a good JRPG, play Persona 5 or look into the highest rated RPGs on the PS4/Vita. There are a lot of really goof RPGs out there you could play instead.

Disappointing
This game was one of the few games that I've played lately that I had to FORCE myself to finish...so repetitive and Akiba wore me out by the end..

Disappointing
A disappointing, painfully put together game that fails to hit its mark. There is not one saving grace this game can offer to appease even the most hardcore anime and RPG gamers.

Akiba's Beat: I fell asleep while playing it.
I'm going to be honest with you, I only got about two hours into this game before I just couldn't take it anymore. Loads of boring, uninteresting dialogue that doesn't develop any characters, just tries to be "lolrandom XD" along with the game being self-referential and making jokes that it's a game.. then add in the fact that the combat is essentially a poor-man's clone of a Tales game, but with even LESS depth, and you have a game that feels like it has no right to be in the same franchise as Akiba's Trip. If you like it, that's fine--I fell asleep while playing it. Only for about 15-20 minutes, but man.. I've been able to sit through some long, LONG games and they've never made me feel as bored as I did playing this. I mean, I can Europa Universalis for days and not get bored, or I can play through the majority of the FF franchise without needing very much sleep. But this one game? I only woke up because I heard my controller hit the floor. Anyway, if you want my suggestion.. play any other JRPG, it's likely better than this one. Maybe it gets better 30 hours in, but personally, I can't stand listening to a complete tool like the main protagonist for another minute. Give it a go for yourself, but if you're expecting another Akiba's Trip, this ain't it. Honestly, Yakuza 0 is closer to Akiba's Trip than this game is, despite that game having absolutely nothing to do with Akihabara. So yeah, try it out and come to your own conclusions. This is just my completely subjective experience with the game, and I personally think it's one of the most middling, boring, mediocre, acceptable, tedious games I've ever played. Maybe it'll be your game of the year! But somehow, I kind of doubt it.

The Ultimate Snoozefest Ever
The original game was hard, but at least it was fun. Too bad I can't say that to this dumpster fire of a game. It's (in layman's terms) a cheap knockoff of the Tales Of Series from the combat down down to bring a knockoff of the Persona Series with the dungeon designs. The story is boring, extremely repetitive(we're talking about going in the same dungeon multiple times and making hardly no progress until the 5th time), the characters are one shot tropes of what you'd expect from an Anime and Akiba is so boring to walk around you'll be dying to go to a delusionscape (that's what the dungeons are actually called, seriously, I couldn't make that up if I tried to) to fight monsters that are limited in design. The bosses are OK until you get this skill and get further into the game, suddenly every boss has way too much hit points, you'll be forced to rely on this skill, otherwise the fights drag on like a Dragon Ball Z episode. Changing the difficulty only makes the enemies more of a drag to fight as they get EVEN MORE HITPOINTS, making the already dragged out fights MORE DRAGGED OUT! The game is more Visual Novel like with RPG elements, so yes, expect long cut scenes of pointless banter that you can literally find yourself putting it on auto and setting the controller down for more than 10 minutes at a time (too much time I'd say). I gave up at chapter 15/16 as it was just boring than watching paint dry. Don't waste your time on this trash. You'll thank me and everyone else who gave this game it's low review scores. It's just that bad.

Great sequel to Akiba's Trip.
This game is great for anybody who enjoyed Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed. This is another exact replica of Japan's famous Akihabara. The place is a gamer's paradise and full of awesome attractions like maid cafes and street performing idols. So anybody who likes the town would also appreciate this game. The story is typical of a JRPG: a boy and girl meet under supernatural circumstances, fall in love and have to save the town from certain doom. Cliche, but there's nothing wrong with the story and the voice acting is just as good as any anime. The combat might be a little difficult to understand in the beginning, but anybody willing to take the time to learn the mechanics will have a great time level grinding and beating up the bad guys. There's also party building as you meet new characters you'll add them to your line up of friendly combatants. These additions are all great, but the main draw is exploring Akiba in all its glory. There's also the Akiba Freedom Fighters from the previous game, so it's a nice throwback to fans of the previous games. If you haven't played the other Akiba game you should definitely give that a try after playing this game.
